Case Study: How I Generated Over 12,000 Video Views In Less Than 12 Hours Without Any Audience or Subscribers

Last week I wrote a blog post about how to get your YouTube videos to go viral.

One of the ways to “go viral” is to capitalize on trending topics.

Last night during the Dallas Mavericks and Phoenix Suns game, Isaiah Canaan had a horrific/gruesome ankle injury and of course the broadcast on ESPN would NOT show any replay of the injury so I knew that if I were to put up a video on YouTube about it that it would get views.

But…

There’s a couple key components that I implemented that others have not and although my video does NOT have the most video views it is ranking extremely well for several keywords because of the techniques I implemented from last week’s blog post.

The first thing I did was make sure my title had most of the keywords that people would be searching for.

The second thing I did was to add all the tags I could with those same long tail keywords that I thought people would be searching for.

And finally the last thing I did was added a thumbnail that shows the injury up close and added the big bold words over the image to ensure I get your attention.

Now you’ll find some other videos got way more video views than I received, however they’re bigger channels with thousands, if not hundreds of thousands of subscribers so naturally when they post a new video they get a lot of organic views.

My channel at the time of this writing only has 12 subscribers (6 subscribers before I posted the video) so 100% of my views came from showing up in the YouTube search results.

My video is currently ranking 8th when you simply enter “isaiah canaan.”

Here’s a complete list of keywords and my current rankings for each keyword:

isaiah canaan – 8th
isaiah canaan ankle – 3rd
isaiah canaan injury – 5th
isaiah canaan leg injury – 3rd
isaiah canaan leg – 5th
isaiah canaan ankle fracture – 4th
isaiah canaan leg fracture – 5th
isaiah canaan horrific ankle injury – 2nd
isaiah canaan horrific ankle leg injury – 2nd
isaiah canaan broken ankle – 9th
isaiah canaan broken leg – 12th
isaiah canaan horrific broken leg – 3rd
isaiah canaan horrific broken ankle – 3rd
isaiah canaan horrific fracture – 2nd
isaiah canaan horrific ankle fracture – 2nd
isaiah canaan horrific leg fracture – 2nd
isaiah canaan horrific ankle leg fracture – 2nd
isaiah canaan fracture – 4th
isaiah canaan gruesome injury – 2nd
isaiah canaan gruesome ankle injury – 2nd
isaiah canaan gruesome ankle leg injury – 1st
isaiah canaan gruesome fracture – 1st
isaiah canaan gruesome ankle fracture – 2nd
isaiah canaan gruesome leg fracture – 2nd

As you can see my video is currently ranking extremely well which is why I am receiving the amount of views that I am.

In fact every time my video moves up or down in the rankings I see a significant boost to the total amount of views in very short period of time.  Likewise when my video fell in the rankings last night I would not receive hardly any views.  Pretty obvious, right?!

Anyone can do this if you are following along with trending topics/news and can be one of the first to “break the news” so to speak.

Hopefully my case study as given you some additional insight into how to get your YouTube videos ranking and viewed to go viral.
